Job Description Summary

The Division of Global Mental Health in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at George Washington University (GW) School of Medicine and Health Sciences (SMHS) has the core mission of global mental health education, research, and advocacy for human rights. Our Division of Global Mental Health is grounded in ethical commitments to further mental health and relieve suffering for those who live in low- and middle-income countries and zones of armed conflict, as well as for immigrants and refugees.

The Division of Global Mental Health is looking for a full time Research Associate to work on externally funded research in the areas of global mental health psychological workforce competencies, child and adolescent mental health, and other areas of global mental health research.

The Research Associate will work closely under the supervision of the Principal Investigator. She or he will be required to adhere strictly to all research study policies, procedures, and ethical expectations, as well as to maintain collegial, respectful, and effective collaboration with diverse study partners. The Research Associate will implement systematic reviews, implement case study data collection, implement expert consensus data collection, participate in and lead project workshops, perform relevant data analyses, assist in designing competency tools and validation procedures, and assist in preparation of interim and final reports of the technical expert activities. In addition, the Research Associate will supervise a four-country qualitative study on feasibility of adolescent mental health services.

The Research Associate must be willing to travel 1/3 of the time to international field sites

Responsibilities include:

  • Conduct referral site engagement, participant recruitment, and rigorous/standardized data collection; design forms, worksheets, and study questionnaires; code and enter data into a research database; compile data and produce reports to be used for analysis of research findings;

  • Assist in report writing and preparing literature reviews and manuscripts for publication; format manuscripts and other documents;

  • Prepare IRB documentation; maintain rigorous record-keeping; assist in preparing grant proposals; and perform related responsibilities as required.

  • Other duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.

Minimum Qualifications

Qualified candidates will hold a master’s degree and 1 year of experience in a related discipline. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position.

Preferred Qualifications
  • A masters degree in global mental health is preferred.

  • Experience in the following fields is necessary: Pre-and post-award oversight, writing and preparing proposals for federal and private funders, working with team of international collaborators, budget development for projects along with monthly monitoring of activities, working closely with departmental grants manager, timely and accurate progress reporting for sponsored research to donors and collaborators, experience working with IRB, including submitting protocols, applications, modifications, and renewals, sourcing RFAs for both federal and private funding, procure items by following department policies and procedures and sponsor guidelines, familiarity with conducting systematic reviews and psychosocial interventions in low and middle income countries.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Able to communicate clearly and provide verbal feedback in a professional manner.

  • Able to follow and understand instructions, and react favorably in all work situations.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and be mentally adaptable and flexible in dealing with a variety of people at various levels.

  • Exceptional analytical and reconciliation skills.
