Job Overview:

This position is for a Principal Architect who will guide and oversee the preparation of designs, leading the architectural teams in the development and delivery of building designs associated with rail and/ or aviation projects. The rail buildings will include stations (deep underground, shallow, at-grade and elevated), depot facilities and traction power substations. The aviation buildings may include terminal buildings, maintenance facilities, hangar buildings, cargo facilities, and support/ services buildings. The Principal Architect is responsible managing the production of design work by Bechtel as well as for coordinating the scope and integration of work assigned to subcontracted design entities. The position will include work supporting business development and delivery of studies and proposals, and may ultimately transition to a project-specific assignment, typically in a lump-sum, design-build project environment. The successful candidate must have strong organizational and teamwork skills, proven problem-solving abilities, and the desire to innovate designs as well as architecture/ engineering work processes, including BIM modeling production.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Plans, develops, coordinates and reviews complex architectural work on a large, complex rail and/ or aviation projects

  • Participates directly in new business efforts involving specialized and unique architectural applications

  • Interviews client personnel to determine their needs, develops scope for cost estimates for services and participates in proposal preparation and presentation

  • Screens and recommends selection of special outside consultants; coordinates their activities and monitors their performance

  • Oversees and participates in preparation of conceptual studies, designs, reports, proposals, value engineering studies or alternate technical concepts (ATCs) in accordance with Bechtel Engineering Procedures

  • Manages coordination of design development with other departments which may include construction, estimating, project controls, procurement, and contracts management

  • Understands and performs the standard architectural work planning, scheduling, and job hour estimating process; conduct independent work requiring judgment in the application of design techniques

  • Prepares or oversees the preparation of discipline estimates and work plan in accordance with project scope, schedule and budget, and supports implementation and assists with performance reporting

  • Monitor and ensure compliance with project budgets, schedules, quantities and quality requirements

  • As directed, supervise, coordinate, provide technical direction and assign work to subordinate architects, designers, and drafters who assist on specific assignments

  • Reviews architectural or engineering drawings and specifications

  • Coordinate and integrate design work between the architectural discipline, engineering disciplines and other design entities

  • Review and approve key design documents, supplier drawings and data, material specifications, drawings, and change orders for the projects to which assigned

  • Interface with clients and stakeholders to make presentations, define project architectural requirements, and obtain contractual and statutory approvals of architectural aspects of the work

  • Provides the technical input to meet procurement requirements

  • Reviews and makes recommendations of the architectural aspects of bid evaluations and awards for approval by project engineering

  • Prepare and/or assists in the preparation of cost estimates, quantity take-offs and staffing requirements for proposals, forecasts and change orders

Job Knowledge:

  • Advanced knowledge of architectural design, production techniques, building materials, and construction methods for development of rail building project deliverables

  • Understands technical issues and cost related to selection of design features and unique architectural requirements

  • Knowledge of precedents in the specialty area and knowledge of principles and practices of related engineering design methods and system

  • Extensive knowledge of the building industry, regulatory standards and design criteria pertinent to rail and/ or aviation buildings architectural work

  • Experienced with the practices and procedures of US as well as International Design Codes and Standards, including NFPA 130

  • Extensive experience with engineering work planning, scheduling and cost estimating

  • Skilled in oral and written communication

  • Communicates complex technical issues and recommends solutions

  • Understanding of engineering planning and control methods

  • Experienced with producing a full, well-coordinated, detailed set of architectural construction documents

  • Experienced with coordinating a multi-discipline design team

  • Experienced with managing knowledge of sustainability and its integration into the design and the construction of rail buildings

  • Skilled in assessing the scope of problems and developing practical solutions

  • Familiar with multidisciplinary Autodesk Design suite (e.g. Autodesk Revit, AutoCAD, Navisworks) design workflows and impacts to overall project productivity, schedule, budget, and staffing plans.

  • Has a working knowledge model review tools (e.g. Autodesk Navisworks) such that he/she can navigate a 3D model to make critical design decisions and be able provide visual communication to partners and clients.

  • Experienced with complex/FOAK building design evolution in order to be able to predict and safeguard against multidisciplinary design conflicts and space allocation shortfalls.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Architecture from an accredited college or university

  • Minimum of twenty (20) years’ experience in architectural design of buildings, including experience with rail and/ or aviation projects

  • US Professional Architects Registration and/ or Professional Architects Registration in a Canadian Province

  • Practical work experience sufficient to demonstrate competence and breadth in architectural design

  • LEED certified professional

  • Experience in customer-facing roles, presenting to customers and working with authorities having jurisdiction

  • Must have the right to work and remain in the US without visa sponsorship

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Professional Architectural Registration in both the US and Canada

  • Active participation in professional association(s) for architecture
